Entrevistas SWCP: Bruce Hopkins

Deram-me então esse papel.

English Version:

The New-Zealand actor Bruce Hopkins participated in several movies, series and musicals. In LOTR,he played the role of Gamlin a commander of the armies of Rohan.

SWCP: Tell us about your role on LOTR.

B.H: I played the role of Gamling, commander of the armies of Rohan, & King Theodens right hand man. It was a superb experience as I got to work along side Bernard Hill who is brilliant UK actor, as well as Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Karl Urban (who have worked with on stage previously). I also got to spend time with many of the other actors outside the shooting schedule.

SWCP: You are also a master of ceremonies in events and conventions. Is it a work that wraps some specific preparation?

B.H: Yes. When I do MC work for conventions and conferences I always do a reasonable amount of preparation. I like to find out a bit about the company and their business, the people who will attend etc. I also try to find interesting facts and ideas to use at the conference as there will always be times when you need to fill in some time while they get something ready. When I MC I also make sure I mix with the people who are attending as that means that feel at ease in my company and trust me when I stand up at the front and speak to them. I write all my introductions for the speakers/presenters I am introducing, some of them are surprised at the information I mention when I introduce them, they know I have done my homework.

SWCP: Why that owes the fact of countless Australian actors have a huge success in the cinematographic industry in the last years?

B.H: I am a New Zealand actor, and there are an increasing number of NZ actors who are also having success in the film industry. It actually takes a lot longer than people realize for someone to break into the US/Hollywood scene. Often they have to have at least one good role in a successful movie or TV series to even bother going to LA. Then they need to spend time trying to meet the right people! Australian and NZ actors seem to be well regarded as they tend to be hard workers who give everything for the job, without being demanding.

SWCP: Do you know why there was changed the age of your character on LOTR films, since in the original Tolkien ´s stories he was an old man?

B.H: They had not written Gamling in the film scripts. But when they went to film Helms Deep they realized Theoden needed to have a general to give orders to the armies. I was given the role. They looked for a name for this character in the books and felt that Gamling could be suitable.

SWCP: You were a dancer in musicals such as West Side Story. Is it one of your artistic facets that you would like to work more often, or do you prefer the actor´s career?

B.H: Just physically I could not do the full on dancing work anymore. I was a professional dancer in NZ and Australia for 8yrs before starting to act.

SWCP: What message would you like to send for your fans?

B.H: Thanks for your interest in the films and also in my role and acting. I have had some brilliant experiences going to fan conventions in Europe, the US and Australia and really appreciate being able to do so. That is only possibly because fans of the films are so passionate about them.

Just to let people know we NZ actors do not get residual payments from the success of LOTR, we are the only English speaking country in the film making world that does not pay actors residuals, although we did manage to get the NZ actors in The Hobbit residuals, and so signing autographs at conventions is a nice way to not only meet the fans but also to earn some income.
