Entrevistas SWCP:Mark Newbold(Jedinews)

In english:
Mark Newbold is currently the co-responsable for the website http://www.jedinews.co.uk/ the best website dedicated to Star Wars in United Kingdom. In this interview,we´ll know a little more about this big Star Wars fan and Jedinews.
SWCP: how did come the idea of creating a british website dedicated to Star Wars?
M.N: that goes back to 1996. Myself and a good friend Louis Turfrey had been running general sci-fi sites since 1995, and because Star Trek was so hot at the time the sites tended to focus on that. Then in 1998 I wrote a novel length Star Wars story called 'Jan Lomona and the Sirens of Amagad', and soon after myself, Louis, Jonathan Hicks (of Farsight Games) and Paul Squire began writing short fiction set in our fictional Setnin sector for the new site, called Wirezone. Come 1999 Louis bought new webspace, chose the name 'Lightsabre' and in late June 1999 Lightsabre was born. We ran Lightsabre from 1999 to 2009, when after the passing of my mother I decided to take a break from the site. At that time Jedi News, which launched in 2007, was growing by the day and James Burns asked me if I would like to merge Lightsabre and Jedi News together. After a frustrating failed attempt at relaunching Lightsabre I agreed, and the two sites merged in August of 2010. This has turned out to be a brilliant move, as the content that Lightsabre did and Jedi News does rarely overlapped, so the merged site (which we decided to call Jedi News) covers a vast array of subjects. Over time we're hoping to expand the Jedi News team greatly and make it the go-too place for all Star Wars news. SWCP: after a few years since its foundation, what kind of projects have you for Jedinews in the future? M.N: With Lightsabre and Jedi News merging it gives us some fantastic opportunities going forward. For example, Lightsabre has started adapting my very first fan fiction story, called 'Quest for Freedom', into comic form. This was very popular on Lightsabre, but with Jedi News bringing in 120,000 unique visitors and 5 million page hits per month, we can relaunch and hit a much wider audience. James is the co-host of The Collector Cast on The Force Cast, and in time I would like to launch a podcast that focuses on British and European Star Wars fandom, with guest and co-hosts from across Europe. Ideally, it would be an audio version of the failed SWORA project from 3 years back. That's something that is in the early stages at the moment - watch this space! Lightsabre was known primarily for its interviews, and we intend to continue with this tradition, bringing the latest from the world of Star Wars to the site and our fans on Facebook. SWCP: usually, attend the largest events dedicated to Star Wars. What kind of participation has your team in these events? M.N: Between the members of the team (and remember, we're all based in the UK apart from Adam who now lives in Canada) we've been present at celebration 3, 5 and Europe as well as a plethora of events in the UK. At most big UK events you will find Jedi News staff covering the proceedings. For example, Jedi News will be at the Empire Big Screen event on Friday 12th and Claudia Con 2011 on Saturday 13th August. Last week we were building LEGO sets at the Fordingbridge Film and TV Festival - we're everywhere, and if we're not there we'll have correspondents covering the events for us (for example Chris Gereke is our US Correspondent and he covered Celebration Japan and two San Diego Comic Cons for us). My personal best event was without doubt Celebration Europe, where we exhibited (as Lightsabre) with Gerald Home (Squid Head from Return of the Jedi) as our guest. We raised over £1000.00 for charity that year, something I am very proud of indeed. And being a part of Jedi News, who actively raise money for charity, means the old Lightsabre team can continue this very worthwhile tradition. SWCP: you have personally known many celebrities. There was some sort of peculiar situations that you´ve seen while you were with them? M.N: That would be telling! Yes, I've been very lucky getting to interview the people that I have, and without fault they've all been interesting and engaging people. I'd probably have to say my favourite time spent with a Star Wars guest would be at last years Fordingbridge Film and TV festival, where myself, my wife Ruth and good friend and Fordingbridge event organiser Dave tree spent the evening in the company of Robert Watts. In fact, there's a photo of Robert and my wife Ruth in issue 126 of The Insider. Beyond that I've had many enjoyable moments with such stars as Gerald Home (a real gentleman and a great ambassador for Star Wars), Richard LeParmentier, who's website I used to run and who I'm proud to call a friend, and many more. My most 'wow' moment was having the chance to interview the late, great Irvin Kershner for an hour, although my interview with Anthony Daniels is very special to men as he said that in 30 years of interviews, mine was one of his favourites. I was thrilled to hear that. SWCP: do you have any knowledge about our club(SWCP) and portuguese fans of the saga, in general? M.N: Through my involvement in SWORA a few years ago I certainly did have some interaction with Portugese fans, and always found the Portugese fans to be passionate and knowledgeable about the Star wars saga. SWCP has a great reputation in the European community for being one of the premier sites, and I know that Lucasfilm holds the site in high regard. Whatever it is you guys do, keep doing it as you're doing a great job. SWCP: what message would you like to leave for portuguese fans of Star Wars? M.N: I'd like to say that despite any language barriers we're all part of the same world, the galaxy far, far away. Jedi News would certainly like to have close ties with SWCP, and if you ever see any of us at a convention, please come up and say hi! Hopefully we will get the chance at Celebration Europe 2!
