Entrevista SWCP: Laurie Goode

E agora? Trabalha em ambas as áreas artísticas?
L.G: Sim, sou guitarista. Toquei num grupo chamado Uproar with Vernon Austin of The Leyton Buzzards no início dos anos 80.

English Version

The English actor and musician Laurie Goode, has been working for several movies and series: Doctor Who, Lost World, An American Werewolf in London, etc. He was also a Stormtrooper, Saurin and a X-Wing Pilot in Star Wars: Episode IV.

SWCP: How the invitation to work in Star Wars appeared?
L.G: I was called to work on the film through an agency I was with at the time called Central Casting. I was actually replaced someone called Peter Jukes. I believe all the Stormtrooper were roughly the same size, so there were no costume problems.

SWCP: Of the three characters whom you embodied in this movie, which one was the most difficult to embody?
L.G: Well, the Stormtroopers' costumes were impractical and quite delicate, so you couldn't really do anything that rough, like barge people or even run. I remember filming the scene when you first see the Stormtroopers blast their way through the door. I was telling some of the guys, as we rehearsed, to bend their legs, as, I would guess, any gun would have a "kickback" on it. So, to bend your legs would counteract the kickback.
The Saurin role was a last minute thing for me. I think both Saurins were supposed to be female.
(Some of you guys might know that) Anyway, the girl who was due to play the character cried off sick, so I was sent to wardrobe dept as her replacement. The top half and helmet just about fitted, but the bottom half was just thrown together. I think it was supposed to be tight fitting. Anyway, the helmet restricted my breathing and was difficult to see out off. I ended up looking out of the mouth.
So there really wasn't much I could do with that. I basically shuffled around the area I was placed in, and every time they shouted "cut", I would whip the helmet off.
I don't remember much about the X-wing pilot scenes. I remember hanging around a lot.
So, to answer your question, the only difficult part about these characters was the Stormtrooper and Saurin's costumes, but as far as performing in front of the camera, I just got on with it.

SWCP: Before being an actor, you were a musician. And now? Do you work in both areas?
L.G: Yes, I'm a guitarist. I played in a group called Uproar with Vernon Austin of The Leyton Buzzards fame in the early Eighties. I still work when in both areas when it comes along.

SWCP: Would you like to compose any music for Star Wars?
L.G: Yes, a novelty song! But there's no chance of that happening!

SWCP: What message would you like to leave for the Star Wars fans?
L.G: I suppose it's the Internet which has enabled Star Wars to have such a huge fan base, and I'm fortunate (and I suppose George Lucas is!) that I was quite young when I did the filming, as I'm here to witness this enormous interest, for so many who worked on the film are now gone.
The vast majority of people I meet at conventions are really friendly, and I always try my best to answer their questions, so if you see at a convention, feel free to ask me any questions you want.
