SWCP: Fale-nos da sua participação no 3º episódio da saga Star Wars.
A.D: Eu jogava basquetebol numa cidade ao Sul de Sidney onde estava a ser filmado, quando todos os clubes receberam uma chamada telefónica a pedir gente com mais de 2 metros de altura para entrar e ser testada. Passei o teste de altura e passei nos 12 meses seguintes, a testar/usar vários trajes que começaram com formas de fibra de vidro em todo o corpo, tendo posteriormente usado crina de cavalo entalhada no traje, até este ficar completo. Tenho de dizer que foi bastante fixe saber que o meu traje foi exibido em todo o mundo em exposições de Star Wars e que não se ajustava a ninguém a não ser a mim!
Depois voltei para Sidney desde a Nova Zelândia onde eu jogava e ao longo desse percurso de alguns dias, filmámos as nossas cenas. Houve seis de nós com esses trajes, assim o que eles fizeram foi a modificação exterior das armaduras e refilmar-nos no local onde tínhamos estado nas rodagens anteriores, assim o que começou com seis Wookiees acabou por parecer centenas deles após editarem todos nós em conjunto na versão final.
Foi uma experiência bastante surreal, já que o diretor do estúdio esteve lá e ajudou-me a sair do local onde rodávamos para receber uma ovação no final da minha cena porque eu tinha dado tudo por tudo e estava exausto, fiquei ao lado do Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett) na zona dos lanches e acidentalmente, comi o seu lanche o que é algo você não faz diariamente!
SWCP: Fez mais alguns papéis em filmes e séries como: Bill & Ted´s,Grange Hill,etc.Está a pensar em seguir definitivamente a carreira de ator?
A.D: Engraçadamente, esses créditos em filmes foram acidentalmente postos na minha página da IMDB pois não participei neles. Estive efetivamente para participar em `Bill and Teds´ mas infelizmente acabou por não se concretizar.
SWCP: Ainda está ligado de alguma forma ao basquetebol?
A.D: Ainda joguei na última temporada numa liga menor mas tive de fazer uma reconstrução completa do tornozelo e sendo assim decidi que devia parar de jogar. Sou o presidente do meu clube apesar de não ter uma função como jogador, mas que acaba também por ser agradável.
SWCP: Com 2,11mt de altura, e pesando cerca de 110 kg que dificuldades encontra mais no seu dia-a-dia?
A.D: Acho que viajar, comprar sapatos e roupa, etc. são as coisas mais complicadas. Penso que posso contar pelos dedos de uma mão,as vezes que fui capaz de entrar numa loja e comprar algo que não tenha sido feito por encomenda.
E nas viagens aéreas, se eu comprar um lugar na classe económica e não ficar nos lugares ao pé da saída, eu realmente luto por qualquer voo que tenha mais de 1 hora.
SWCP: Por falar em dificuldades, custou-lhe muito usar o traje do Wookiee Merumeru?
A.D: O traje não era tão mau assim pois como tinha uma tubulação em borracha que bombeava água fria durante as pausas nas filmagens para nos manter frescos, e também tínhamos um filtro de ar que nos ajudava quando precisávamos de algum ar. O único problema que realmente tive foi com as botas, em que tinha os pés em cima delas, cortavam a circulação aos meus dedos dos pés quando as usava, portanto os meus dedos dos pés ficaram entorpecidos durante 3-4 anos posteriormente o que foi um bocado desconfortante nos meus dias de jogos mais sérios.
À parte disso, nada demasiado sério!
SWCP: Gostaria de enviar uma mensagem aos seus fãs?
A.D: Não sei quantos fãs tenho realmente lá fora mas se os tiver, quero apenas agradecer-lhes pelas cartas que me têm enviado e pelo vosso interesse no meu papel em Star Wars. Foi uma experiência assombrosa que sei que direi aos meus filhos quando crescerem e podermos ver o filme em conjunto.

Axel Dench is a former professional basketball player who played the role of Wookiee Merumeru in Star Wars: Episode III.
SWCP: Tell us about your participation in Star Wars: Episode III.
A.D: I was playing basketball in a city just south of Sydney where it was being filmed, and a casting call went out to all clubs asking for people over 6'10" to come in and be tested. I passed the height test and over the next 12 months went through a number of costume fittings which started with full body fiberglass casts, through to having the horse hair strands individually sown into the suit, until it was complete. I have to say it's pretty cool to know that moving around the world from Star Wars exhibit to exhibit is my costume which fits no one but me! I then flew back to Sydney from New Zealand where I was playing and over the course of a few days we shot our scenes. There were 6 of us in costume so what they did was change out armour and reshoot us standing next to where we'd been in the previous shot, so what started with 6 Wookiee's ends up looking like hundreds after they edited us all together in the final version.
It was a pretty surreal experience in that the head of the studio was there and helped me off the floor to receive a standing ovation at the end of my shoot because I'd given it my all and was exhausted, and I stood next to Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett) in the buffet line and accidently took his food which is something you won't do everyday!
SWCP: You also participated in other movies/series such us Bill & Ted´s, Grange Hill, etc.Are you thinking in following definitely the actor´s career?
A.D: Funnily enough those screen credits have accidentally been put on my IMDB page and I wasn't in those films. I would have been pumped to be in Bill and Teds but no go I'm afraid.
SWCP: Are you still connected in any way to basketball?
A.D: I was still playing last season in a minor league but just had a full ankle reconstruction so have decided enough is enough. I'm the president of my club though so still have a role to play in the game which is nice.
SWCP: Standing 211 cm and weighs 243 Lbs, which difficulties do you find in your life?
A.D: I guess travel, buying shoes and clothes, etc are the tough things. I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've been able to walk in to a shop and buy something off the shelf that hasn't been custom made. And travel wise, if I'm ever in economy and don't get the exit seats I really struggle for any flights over 1 hour.
SWCP: Speaking in difficulties, did you have any to wear the Merumeru´s costume?
A.D: The costume wasn't too bad as we had rubber tubing sown in to it that they'd pump cold water through in-between takes to keep us cool, and we also had a minder with us who'd help us in and out when we needed some air.
The only problem I did have was that the boots, that had the feet over the top of them, cut off the circulation to my toes when I wore them, so my toes were numb for 3-4 years afterwards which was a bit awkward in my serious playing days. Apart form that nothing too serious!
SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for your fans?
A.D: I don't know how many actual fans I have out there but if I do, I just wanted to thank you for the letters you send and the interest you take in my time in Star Wars. It was an amazing experience that I know I'll tell my kids about when they grow up and we can watch the movie together. Thanks again and may the force be with you!
